SKIN TAGS

Description and Possible Medical Problems

The term “skin tag” is one of those things that sounds old-fashioned, like something your grandmother would talk about.

For those who prefer more up-to-date terms, a skin tag is also known as a cutaneous tag or an acrochordon. Skin tags are basically benign growths that protrude somewhat from your skin. They may be the same color as your skin or a bit darker, and they usually appear on the neck and torso. They are a normal part of aging and are nothing to worry about. Skin tags first start to appear in midlife and are especially common in people 60 and over.

Treatment

Though they are benign tumors, skin tags are not dangerous. Many people find them unsightly, however, and choose to have them removed by a physician. The usual method of removing a skin tag is cryotherapy or cauterization.

If you choose to leave the skin tag alone and its appearance later changes, it’s a good idea to have it checked by your doctor since any changes in a benign skin tumor, from a mole to a skin tag, can be a sign of malignancy.
